The Counterpoint
YOU’LL NEED
- 1 oz. Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye
- .75 oz. Campari
- .5 oz. Capertif
- .25 oz. (easy) Nux Alpina Black Walnut Liqueur
- Orange Peel, for garnish
BACKGROUND
- This cocktail was originally created for Campari’s Negroni Week charity fundraising event in 2018 and has proven to be a guest favorite, especially in the fall and winter. It is based on a canon classic called My Old Pal (today more commonly just Old Pal), first recorded in 1927, when it would have been made with blended Canadian whisky, Campari and sweet vermouth. The modern Old Pal is made with rye, Campari and dry vermouth, which makes it rather lean. The Counterpoint is a richer drink, made with a high proof rye, an herbaceous aperitif, and just a touch of a nutty liqueur.
TO MAKE 1 DRINK
- Put all ingredients (excepting the orange peel) in a mixing glass and add ice.
- Stir to chill well but taking care not to over dilute.
- Strain into a chilled coupe.
- Express oils from orange peel over the drink then place in glass to garnish.
